First Grade

FIRST GRADE

In first grade, students build on the letter mastery, beginning reading and writing skills and math concepts developed in Kindergarten.

In Bible, students focus on character traits through learning Old and New Testament accounts and applying lessons to their own lives. Worship and chapel journals are another form of application.

In Language Arts, focus is on phonics, blends, digraphs, CVC, CVVC and sight words.  Reading groups are utilized each day and students do centers for application of content taught.  Morning tubs are utilized to review content and introduce new concepts.
 
Math has an emphasis on mastery of addition facts, place value, telling time, counting money, number sense and much more.

Social studies units are centered on American symbols, Pilgrims and early settlers, community helpers, Presidents' Day and famous Presidents.

Science units are about the moon and its phases, five senses, arctic animals and the seasons.
